OUR PROJECTS
Wild About Sandgate
We have recently received the exciting news that we have been awarded a £1000 grant from Folkestone and Hythe District Council for our Wild About Sandgate project with the end aim of creating a Community Nature Reserve in Sandgate. Basically the project aims to raise awareness of all the public green spaces in Sandgate, including the sea and shoreline by educating and enthusing people about everything that lives and grows in them. Alongside this, the project will support and encourage people to take positive action by making micro nature reserves in their own gardens, balconies or windowsills and lend the odd hand to volunteer groups like the Sandgate Sprucers, Sandgate Environmental Action and Sandgate Community Garden in keeping the public spaces however small, literally blooming beautiful and full of life. All these spaces together will create a patchwork of mini habitats across Sandgate which will link the areas, encouraging nature to flourish.
The project will include an illustrated map of all the green spaces and a family friendly launch event on Sunday 7th June in Enbrook Park plus a series of mini events such as moth trapping; bird walks; mini beast safaris etc. Wild about Sandgate will link to our existing citizen science  project Sandgate Watch .

Bee Walks
We had training on Bumblebee identification skills and set up two bee transcepts ‘Bee Walks’ which SEA volunteers walk from March to October identifying, recording and reporting on Bumblebees.
This data supports the work of The Bumble Bee Conservation Trust.

Helping keep Sandgate beautiful and litter free
Fancy some exercise or an activity with your children or grandchildren that will also help your village? Then why not do some litter picking to help keep our village, sea and beaches litter free. Sandgate Parish Council have provided community litter picking kits, which are now available to borrow from outside of the library. Inside the chest are litter pickers, hoops, bags and gloves. There are 20 pickers in total so it is perfect for a group activity.
All you need is the code to unlock the storage box which you can get from emailing sandgateenvironmentalaction@gmail.com or from the library staff during library open hours. Then sign it out in the notebook provided and off you go. When you’ve finished just return the equipment to the box and sign it back in.
What to do with the full litter bags?
Leave by a council public bin and they will be collected by the council. Do not leave outside the library.
If you could separate the recycling and take it home in a separate bag that would be brilliant
If you are really keen 😊 Surfers Against Sewage are running a campaign where they are asking volunteers to sort and enter data about what they collect. For more details visit Surfers Against Sewage Million Mile Clean
We’d love to know how you got on, so take a photo of your filled bags and email it to sandgateenvironmentalaction@gmail.com
Thermal Image surveys
Where there are suspected problems with the building fabric such as moisture ingress, condensation or where there is the perception that the thermal efficiency isn't what it should be, the use of thermography can provide excellent visual and quantitative evidence of the causes of the suspected problems.
SEA have a compact FLIR camera which we use on appropriate winter days to investigate these issues and illustrate where problems exist, surveys undertaken last year proved very useful in identifying both areas of damp and sources of cold drafts, which once identified were relatively easily rectified by the owners.
To achieve best results a significant temperature differential between inside and out is required, so generally the surveys are only possible between November and February, If you’re interested in getting thermal imagery of your property this coming winter get in touch.
